I photographed these birds summer of 2008 and 2007, respectively.
First bird(on the beach) couldn't fly; this was at Kill Devil Hills, N.C. A well-intentioned man tried to pick up the bird to take it to the SPCA, but got pecked very badly and his hands, chest, and wrists were bleeding. The animal specialists from SPCA or some shelter were called(after I took these photos) and just told everyone to leave the bird alone; s/he was tired and would fly back out to the ocean when rested.

The next birds were in an aviary in Key West along with many other species and lots of butterflies.

Can you guys help me name these birds??
thanks,
dan

I'm not very good on North American birds but I'll ask around Dan.

I've had a reply on the aviary birds and here it is.

Lower is a Paradise Tanager. Upper probably a female/juv./non-br. male Red-legged or Shining Honeycreeper, though I wouldn't be able to exclude female-type sunbird sp. beyond all doubts.

On the other bird, I thought booby when I first saw it but checking on the bill shape, I thought gannet.  Interestingly I had two replies so far.  The first said, maybe blue-footed booby and the second said northern gannet.  I think I'd agree with the gannet choice unless someone comes up with something different.

It's now thought to be a blue-footed booby.  Just shows, you should always go with your first choice.  Here is some of the feedback.

"Your bird looks pretty close to this one but without blue feet

http://www.photoseek.com/94GAL-10-34...ootedBooby.jpg

you can see blue in your birds face around the eye, that is what made me say blue-footed booby in the first place plus the dark wing area and the salt and pepper looking head."

Edit.

There seems to be some disagreement as to what the bird is so I've included a link to the discussion. Gannet/Booby link

Looks more like the Gannet to me. The eye colour is off on the Booby. Good detective work!
