Last Friday I went over to Bahrain for a bit of bird watching.  I spotted a desert warbler and as I had not seen many decent pictures of one on the net, I gave it all my attention.  I'd decided to use the D300 due to the low noise capability but after getting some great shots of the warbler, they turned out to be massively overexposed.

Looking around the net, it seems to be a common fault with the camera and last night I was putting it through some tests and occasionally it did it again.  I hope Nikon fix it with a firmware solution very quickly because at the moment I'm wary of using it.

Sorry to hear your Nikon just isn't getting with the game....

Can't you set it to bracket the shot, or underexpose a stop or two...  I mean if it is consistent or only happens in known conditions.

It was totally inconsistent and occurred out of the blue.  I'm going to leave a message on Nikon's support site and see what they say.  What annoys me the most is, I may never get another opportunity to photograph the warbler again.

What sort of methodical tests did you do adrian, i would guess it could be a real issue taking candid bird shots like yourself, i haven't noticed anything then again I'm not at your level, and all of my shots so far have been structured, where i have been able to take the time to review the shot then adjust compensate if required, i'm shooting everything in raw too just to get accustomed to it and its qualities and versatility which is another safenet i guess. by testing do you mean taking the same structured shot several times on occassion the same shot was over exposed with no other variables must say the problem didn't raise itself taking my watch pics after i initially dialled in the compensation it stayed bang on throughout several hundred shots [coming soon! ]

For a quick test, I kept taking the same subject with various ISO and then image settings.  They were inconsistent to say the least.  The image below is a straight Jpeg from the camera.  It's only been resized and not altered in any other way.  The NEF RAW file has been attached to a question to Nikon.  Let's see what they come up with.

Exactly................how can I go for a once in a lifetime shot when I can't rely on the exposure settings.  I've lost all confidence in the camera.

I may have discovered the problem.  Today I went through the whole setup of the camera and kept taking pictures that were not consistent.  I got the manual out and went through it page by page.  Then it struck me    The exposure bracketing mode had been set On and the camera was taking a set of three pictures at different exposures.     I can only think this happened when I packed the body in my cabin baggage or while I was out on Friday.  Everything has been reset and after a number of test shots, it seems OK.

Let's hope this is the end of the problem.

Well, we're waiting for the next flock of shots..

Is the bracketed  data still there from your earlier field shots...?

I'll have to have a look Larry and get back to you.

Just had a look and that information is not included in the metadata.
