I like doughnuts. I love 'em. I don't eat 'em often because there are no doughnut shops here, the last Dunkin' Donuts packed-up many years ago.

There are bakeries that sell doughnuts but they work out at 18 Euro a dozen (   ), come in in a disappointingly low number of varieties and are just not the real thing.

In my early youth, doughnuts came in just one variety: plain glazed in a box of four (later five) and made by a bakery that doesn't exist anymore. Van der Meer & Schoep. They started making them because in the early fifties all that was American became very popular over here.

For years I was in the assumption that those doughnuts were but a facsimile of the 'real' US donut (observe the different spelling) but now I know those doughnuts were very, very close to the actual product.

To get to the point, in Indonesia it is doughnuts galore. Both Krispy Kreme and Dunkin' Donuts are widely available and a dozen is less than 5 Euro.

The trend now is local Indonesian brand franchises that make doughnuts on the spot, you can actually see the process. The only drawback is the fact that they tend to be very, very high in sugar content. Ultra sweet, so to speak. The frosting will remove the enamel from your teeth in an instant, so to speak.

Well, if you are my pick in the Secret Santa draw, I know what to send you! I think there are 6 Krispy Kreme shops within 10 miles of me!

I don't eat doughnuts very often, but lately the doughnut word has come up here and there in this forum and now I'm getting a craving. There are dozens and dozens of doughnut shops in this city......about 30 Tim Horton's alone. I can walk to two of them in under 5 minutes!

So.....I'm thinking.......creme filled.........Mmmmmmm......

Pam and I just had this morning, vanilla creme (pudding) filled, chocolate glazed doughnuts from the new Dunkin' Donuts that opened up a few months ago...

It's just down the street from the Hooters that opened last week and where we had lunch today............

Possible origins
Oliebollen Dutch doughnuts

Doughnuts have a disputed history. One theory suggests that doughnuts were introduced into North America by Dutch settlers, who were responsible for popularizing other American desserts, including cookies, apple pie, cream pie, and cobbler. Indeed, in the 19th century, doughnuts were sometimes referred to as one kind of olykoek (a Dutch word literally meaning "oil cake"), a "sweetened cake fried in fat.

We are great, aren't we   Anyhoo, our popular New-Year's eve treat called oliebol (deep fried ball-shaped contraption made from bread-like dough) has no similarities with the doughnut. But both are very tasty, very sweet

It is with things like these that our world is not small, but too big. Sending a box of doughnuts or 'oliebollen' to another continent is a. prohibitively expensive and b. they arrive stale. What a shame, because it would be a great gesture

To our great luck, the three times Dutch champion resides in Rotterdam. It means gritting your teeth and standing in a very long cue but it's worth it    They are best when they are fresh (obviously). I tried freezing a dozen and eating them later but some of the essence is lost

Frans - why not make your own? I've never tried it, but I'll bet simple raised/glazed would be not difficult?
