Not a prize winning photo, but I finally got a hummingboid at the feeder...

Well, the little Nikon Cookpix 4800 serves me well with its compact size and 8.3:1 zoom. It's light and I carry it everywhere. I realize its limitations, however.

We were in the back yard and saw the hummingbird fairly close up. He was not a ruby throat, I don't think, but had a small almost irridescent red spot on his throat. He flitted around the zinnias and the feeder, then made a beeline for my head! Had I not ducked I think he would have flown into me. I don't know why.

i love hummingbirds, and strangely enough, peregine falcons. i was talking on the phone to a friend of mine who lives in thailand about two months ago, and a hummingbird flew up to my storm door(strange!). my friend said hummingbirds are a good omen. i don't know if that's true or not, but i also love the owls in the woods near my house that call to one another at night. in fact, i might change my login name to 'Dancing Owl."

Sadly, I haven't had much luck this summer getting the hummingbirds to try out my feeder. I've seen a couple of the little guys in the yard, around the honeysuckle, but have never spotted one at the feeder. It's the same feeder I've used for years; a blown glass red bottle with stopper and feeding tube. I mix 1 part sugar to 4 parts filtered water. The only thing I can figure is that I'm not keeping the mixture replaced often enough and it goes bad. The feeder hangs in constant shade... should I have been replacing the sugar water every couple of days?

Anyway, the little guys will be heading south before long... maybe over the next month I can get them to the feeder. I did move it from the magnolia tree to the honeysuckle bush.

Any suggestions?

i've had humming birds show up at windows and doors lately! this never happened before, ever....
and the ones out West seem to love the mountains(out near Big Sur).

This past summer we have enjoyed Ruby Throated Hummingbirds at our feeders and twice I saw a Rufous Hummingbird in the back yard. I've heard you are suppose to change the sugar water every couple of days in the feeders to keep them coming back frequently!!!
