We had a bit of an International Incident last night.

At home in the UK we have an alarm system fitted to the house. On the external wall is a siren with a strobe light combined. When an alarm situation is detected, the siren sounds for 5 minutes and the strobe flashes. After the 5 minutes have elapsed, the strobe gives of a flash approximately every 10 seconds to tell you an alarm situation has happened.

Last night the strobe was flashing but the alarm had not gone off. Our neighbor noticed this and phoned our friends who have a key and look after the place. They were in Tenerife on holiday and they phoned us in Saudi Arabia to tell us what had happened. I then phoned our neighbors who explained things and added they had noticed that there had been an external porch light on permanently and this had now gone off. Armed with this information I phoned my brother back in the UK who lives with my parents, they have an additional key for emergencies. I explained what had gone on and told him that the porch light had probably failed, tripping a breaker inside the house which had possibly sent a spike through the electrical system which had been picked up by the alarm system which in turn had set off the strobe. My brother and dad went round to the house and determined this was what had happened, they reset the system and everything is now back to normal. When we got the "All Clear", we called our friends in Tenerife to give them the news.

This all took less than an hour from start to finish. Could you imagine how long this would have taken just a few years ago. Thank goodness for mobile phones and modern communications.

No kidding! I can't even imagine the days before a cell phone....
Good thing it was a false alarm though!

Yes, my wife was starting to panic when she heard the word "alarm". She soon calmed down when I explained what had happened.

You never see a policeman these days, they leave it up to the local neighborhood watch. No I don't have a vintage collection there, just a few old watches.

When I lived there they turned up on a bicycle.

Neighborhood Watch? Curtain twitchers?

What's Blighty coming to
