This might sound a little bizarre (won't be the first time!), but how would people feel about holding a pollyanna for the holidays?  This is a small, closely knit community of sorts but it won't always be.  Many interact daily and feel a real kinship with other members.

Here's my thinking . . .  Obviously, it would be voluntary and we'd have to have a fair number of participants.  Everyone who signs up is given a number.  And perhaps the mods (or a member) would be willing to randomly assign one number to the next, and could in essence, pick for us.  Of course, the mods and Adrian are an important part of the core here who would hopefully join in.  I don't think this would be terribly difficult to carry out and maybe a lot of fun.  Your thoughts?

I'm not sure what a pollyanna is, apart from a book and film about a very annoying girl, so I checked out Wiki.  Is this what you meant?

Pollyanna principle

My Dear Adrian,

That's more of a psychological construct not quite what I had in mind.  Let me try to explain . . .  X amount of members (participants) are given a number when they sign up.  One number is randomly paired with another, meaning that one person purchases a small gift for whomever corresponds with their number.  Collectively, we as members decide how much we should spend on these small gifts.  Let's say hypothetically, I pick your name, you might list 3 or 4 small items you want, and I surprise you, pick one from your list and send it to you.  Pollyanna participants can spend any amount but it's usually $10 to $20.  It's the process of giving that's fun and festive.  Could someone else step in and explain things more clearly, I don't feel like I've done an adequate job.  Does this make sense to you, Adrian?

Ah, it's like a "secret Santa". I think it's a nice idea!

Me too, Caroline.  I think next year at this time there may be markedly more members and it would exponentially increase the difficulty of carrying this through.  Would other people please make your feelings known?  Is this something in which you'd like to participate?

Several members signed on tonight and only one responded affirmatively, so it looks like this is a wash.  Oh well, it didn't hurt to put the idea out.

Faith, give it 24 hours or so as we cover all the different time zones.  I'll make a new post up with a poll and see how it goes over the next day or so.  I won't be online much myself until Saturday as I'm off to Bahrain in about five hours and I'll be relying on Internet cafes.

Oh! You want us to do a Kris Kringle exchange! OK....I like the idea except for the listing of things I might want. I can't even manage to do that for Al when he wants to do Christmas shopping. I prefer the idea of a "randomly picked" item, but of course will follow the rules like a good girl.

I have no clue where the poll is, but I'm in if it takes off.

My only hesitation is due to my own flawed personality - I tend to procrastinate and have anxiety over choosing gifts... how weird is that?
