Bees are in decline!!!!!

The numbers of bees here in the UK is rapidly falling. In some areas of the UK, honeybee numbers have dropped by 80% and bumblebee numbers by 60%.

All sorts of things are blamed, loss of wild habitats, intensive farming, overuse of pesticides and herbicides and even mobile phone masts and towers. The simple truth is that bees need flowers, and there are very few flowers to be found in the farmed countryside these days.

In america thhere has been recent problems with Colony Collapse Disorder and worldwide there are similar issues.

Remember bees do not just make honey, thie pollination assists a great percentage of the flowing crops we rely on for food.

Recent advice is saying that planting bee friendly plants and even setting up mini hives in your garden may be enough to promote stabilisation amongst the bee population.

We've done our bit planting lavender and heather wherever we can in the garden. Claire has drawen teh line at a home hive

Poor old bees.

What has this got to do with wasps.

It's the complete opposite of the bees...these blighters seem to be everywhere.

Where Bees promote life, wasps seem to promote fear and pointy, stingy pain.

Just what is the point of wasps!??????!

Here's a picture of a large wasp I came into contact with in Bahrain.  The bees around it are tiny in comparison.

Wow.

I'd love to have a home hive - bees are fascinating! We just don't have the room, though.

I love bees.  They love the sage bushes planted around the schoolyard.  I've been aware of the problems with the bee populations, Jim, and have been worried about them, too.  Maybe it's my imagination, but I've seen more of them around this year than in previous years.

Wasps... scorpions with wings, as far as I'm concerned.  Are they put here to help us appreciate bees even more?

I've looked at a small home hive in the garage roof with a nice brick feature openintg for them to fly in and out of but Claire is still against it.

In fact she told me to buzz off!
