Who likes TransitionalsOne that gets often overlooked in Rolex history is the 16800 sometimes refered to as the "transitional" diver. Following in the footsteps of the reference 1680, the 16800 brought the Submariner to a new level.
Introduced circa 1979, the 16800 was the first Submariner fitted with a sapphire crystal and thethen new 3035 fast beat movement. Notable also, here was the first diver equipped with a true quick-set date feature and a uni-directional bezel.
Because of the use of the sapphire crystal the depth was increased to the 300m/1000 ft, we see today on the modern references.
Early versions came equipped with the wonderfull matt dial with painted markers before Rolex made the switch to gloss with WG surrounds. Some feel the 16800 gives the best of both worlds with the warmth of the matt dial configuration and the strength and scratch resistance of sapphire.
