White Pass & Yukon Railroad.

During the Gold rush days of 1898, Gold rush Stampeders had to go from the Yukon Territory to Alaska through the White Pass.  This narrow (single file) pass was monitored by the Yukon Mounties and each Stampeder had to lug 2,000 lbs of "grubstake" to the top before allowed to continue.

Thinking there was a market there, some enterprising investors built a railroad to connect Skagway in Alaska to the Yukon Territory.

After boarding in Skagway, you go past the old rail-yard and see what happens if you get stuck in the snow:

Our Train starts fairly flat and begins a 20 mile journey from Sea level to 7,000 ft:

Looking out the side, you can see where we're going all the way up to that rickety wooden bridge, and then into the mountain..

But first, we have to climb at the maximum slope for a train and hug the side of the mountain:

Finally reaching the tunnel:

On the other side, there are breathtaking views and plenty of rugged terrain..  It probably doesn't look much different today from what the early pioneers saw..  You can see the remnants of the original foot-path to the right of the large boulder, cut through the tundra and trees.

It's a recommended short day journey for anybody....

Fantastic achievement and scenery Larry.  It looks a bit too cold for me.

Looks very nice!    I would stick to looking at the pictures though... that looks to scary for me to do for real!
