Spirits to raise the spirit!

This sounds incredibly ridiculous, but what does good scotch taste like?

To a simpleton like me, just like bad scotch.

Seriously, my husband had a sip of some high-dollar scotch when he was at a colleague's house for something - he said it was smooooth and delicious.

Ah, it's many things to many people.  It has to be tried, some may like it and others not, it's a personal choice.

That's funny Larry. I usually only drink white wine, but lately I'm just sort of growing tired of that. Problem is, I can't think of anything else to have INSTEAD of that.

Ah, Nancy.  Before I call you a peasant, tell what scotch you have tasted that results in that opinion.

My wife, who was never a whisky drinker, has learned to like certain single malts because of their smooth taste and nose.

Granted, it is an acquired taste, but once acquired, you crave more.

I mean, if one has the means, there is a way for a good spirit to raise the spirits.
Jimbits76

I ain't a cultured expert like Ed is on such matters but I will say that Whiskeys can be as subtle and as nuanced as wines.

Most good quality malts will have an earthy, peaty undertone and perhaps offer a little honey or heather on the palatte. Strangely, you may be able to identify the clean crystal sping waters through the smoke and the grains.

Some guys (Ed I'd guess) can even identify the wood used in the casks...portwood etc...

If you can't get over the initial burn when tasting, add a drop of distilled water and allow it to mingle in the spirit. This will allow the whiskey to dilute and prevent the sharp tingle from the alcohol.

Now where did I put my Southern Comfort?

J
Lisa

I've got to go back and find Ed's post about the single malts... that's even an alcohol my husband would touch.  Stuff like beer, wine and mixed drinks give him an almost instant headache, but he can tolerate Scotch very well.
Jimbits76

Booze?

Nothing wrong with booze.

Even British women like a drop of the old demon drink yet maintain their decorum...makes you proud don't it?

I'm not quite that good, Jim.  But I can tell the difference between whiskies aged in sherry casks from those aged in oak.  To my taste, the sherry cask imparts a smoothness and mellowness that oak cannot possibly do.

And not all whiskies are peaty.  Only the ones that come from Islay have a strong peat influence.  The 10 yr old Laphroaig is the epitome of peaty.  For a young whisky it is quite smooth, I guess as a result of the peat.  Others, like the Speyside or Higland malts have no peat at all.

A drop of distilled or spring water will release flavors that you won't get from the straight whisky.
Jimbits76

See that's why you're the expert and why I'm drinking Glenmorangie and coke!!!!

OK, explain the drop of distilled water again? The science geek in me wants to know!

Between you with your Glenmorangie an coke, and the redneck, with his exhaust grilled possum, I am barfing all over my keyboard.

I'm not sure of the science behind it, but if you add a small amount (not more than a couple of drops) of spring water to a whisky, it will release certain chemicals that change the nose and taste.  You dilute the pure malt just a bit to get these changes.

I gave up a possible career in medicine after dealing with 15 credit hours of 8:00 AM chemistry courses in college.  That's why I'm a double E (electronics engineer) by training.
Jimbits76

Now...once upon a time, folk would have said that drinking a glenmorangie with a mixer was a bad thing....they may have barfed over their keyboards in fact.

That was before they were bought out by LVMH in 2004.

Alas, no matter how they endorse it or throw huge amounts of cash at the brand image, it's about fit for Coca Cola like the JD stuff in todays day and age.

Support your small producers!!!!!!!!!!!

Rant over

Tell me about it. ALL the science courses are early in the morning!

However, I think one of the two majors more back breaking than chem is electrical engineering.

Wait - you're an EE but practive law???

In order to be a registered patent attorney, you need to have a degree in one of the engineering or science fields.

And it's all in where your talents lie.  I breezed through my EE and advanced math courses.  It was the chem courses that did me in.

So EE does stand for Educated Ed.   If only I would have gotten my BS and the catchy name that comes with it.

Yeah - most 6 yr olds are still practicing their letters. Not doing quadratic equations!!
