Rugby

OK, all you Brits! Tell me about rugby. Believe it or not, there are leagues here in my area. One is a non-contact (ages 6-11) and then goes to contact after that. Another is non-contact ages 6 - 18. Our middle school (ages 11-14) and high school (15-18) have their own teams.

I am surprised that this is even available to us, and am wondering about the safety. I won't put Max in football (American), as the constant brutal tackling is pretty damaging, in my opinion. But, people have told me that rugby isn't as rough as football. Of course, there's always the non-contact rugby league.

I'm intrigued - opinions please!

Rugby is rougher than American football and much less glamourous.

Old fashioned Brit in me says get him in there...he can get stuck in and it will toughen him up.

New soppy father in me says run Max...run as far away from that game as possible.

That said, I remember games at school, rain lashing down in almost sub zero temperatures, a twenty odd stone Welsh games teacher charging towards a group of us with fire in his eyes and a sneer on his toothless mouth.

After that, I wasn't scared of anything or anyone!

Well, maybe the non-contact league is the way to go, then. 'Cause, there aren't any pads, correct?

There's a summer league that is available for his age group.

No pads.

Tape up his ears...he'll thank you for it.

What?!!

I think perhaps we'll stick with soccer and baseball.

I always thought Rugby was a game where guys get together, run around and beat each other up. And as an after thought they toss in a football to make it appear they are attempting to play a game!!!

Yeah, Leo - sounds like it!

Rugby is a brutal contact sport when played at a pro level and a lot tougher than American football. You have to be very fit. Great for learning about team play and good fun to play I played for five years. Size does not matter if you are large you will play as a forward smaller one like me that were fast played as centres or wingers.

The non contact game for smaller kids is great fun, it will certainly keep them fit.

Rugby has great tradition here is the All Blacks (New Zealand) The Haka a traditional Maori welcome

Holy cow, Martin! I think the folks who told me it's not as rough as our football is smoking something.

Max is on the smaller side but fast, so I may put him in the non-contact league this summer. I know he'd love it, and it looks like it could build coordination as well.

He's the type that would play soccer in the pouring rain, and pitches a fit if a game gets called for any reason.

So long as it is supervised and played properly he will be OK, like all sports, injuries happen, great sport to take up though.
