Rolex gift for a woman...

...There is a lovely woman who does some accounting/billing work for my husband's group practice.  Over the past couple of years she has identified and corrected tens of thousands of dollars in errors... anyway, Dave has suggested the group buys her a Rolex for a Christmas gift of appreciation.  The others in the group are liking the idea, and if they decide to do this Dave has volunteered me to make the selection for them.

So.... care to share your ideas about the perfect Rolex for a woman in her late 60s?  I'm thinking a Lady DJ, though the small dial would need to be easy to read.  I'm also thinking all stainless, though I'll have more of an idea about budget later.

So what do you think about a SS, white face, roman numerals, fluted bezel, and jubilee bracelet?   Should I even consider midsize?  I found a couple pics on photobucket but wasn't sure if they were counterfeit so I didn't want to use them.  But I know ya'll know what this combo looks like....

I've always liked Lady date in two tone with a juby.

Black dial and diamond markers...bit flash but classic...that is the one I'd want to buy Claire.

It would be extra fun if they would let me get diamonds... vicarious thrill!

I don't know, I'd get an easy to read one.  I'd really consider a midsized oyster perpetual with the 3,6,9 or a mid-sized SS/Pt YM.  Easy to read with big numbers or indicies.
Lisa

Mik, do you think a woman her age would like a midsize?  I guess I'd have to find out a little more about her.... I've never even met her.
mfer

From the people I have talked to in their 50's, etc they seem to be more worried about the weight then the size.  My father-in-law is now wearing 42mm watches that I have bought from him.  It just needs to be light, so it is all Titanium.  The midsized ones are pretty light compared to the 40mm watches.  I think she might not like it right off the bat, but if she wears it, she'll quickly get used to it and appreciate the functionalness (is that a word?).  I mean we aren't talking a lot of weight here.  I remember the first time I put my sub on, I thought it was HUGE.  Now, it is my smallest and lightest!

Do you know how here eyesight is?  Near sighted, far sighted, reading glasses, etc.

It's probably a safe bet she has reading glassess... shoot, I need them and I'm in my forties.  That's why I want to be sure and put some thought into a readable dial.  My first Rolex was a Lady DJ with a pink concentric dial and it was almost impossible for me to read - lots of glare and low contrast between the numbers and the face.

I like Jim's idea, special watch to reward the occasion, it should be a little glitzy and dressy.
mfer

Here are the ones I was speak of.  A little sporty, a little lady like and easy to read.

Nice, Mik.  Isn't the Lady OP also 26mm?  Hmmm... wonder if she'd like a date function?
Jimbits76

Claire likes the top one.

Before the crash in work and reduction in OT and hours etc, that was the one I was gonna buy her.

It used to be about £1900 here...Now it's closer to £3k! Bah!

No, these are 31mm and much more readable.  For me (no offense to any ladies that have them), the 26mm are horrible to read and I have good eyes!

For a date, that is why I recommended the 35mm SS/Pt YM, or gold versions if she so likes.  It is smaller than the 36mm Datejusts and very readable.  That being said, there are many datejust models that are wonderous and great deals can be had on datejusts over the YM.  AD's typically don't discount the YM as much as DJ's if that matters.

This is Brenda's.  It's quite hard to read in certain light but she loves wearing it all the same.

That dial/gold combo is a stunner!
Carolina

What a great idea! I second the fact that a midsize dial might be easier to read. Can someone covertly check out her watch selection over the next few weeks? Or maybe send in another woman to show off a new watch and get her comments.

Heck, I'm sure whatever you pick out, she'll love!

I agree about the midsize being easier to read... I was just wondering if, because of her age, she might think it was too big.

Definitely will have to find out a little more about her.... thanks to everyone for the good comments and insights so far.

What a lovely thing to do Lisa! I like Brenda's btw. Nice and easy to read, and a lady of her age will probably like the gold with ss.

I agree.  Hope they give me a generous budget!

Lisa, I'm sure the lady will be thrilled with having any Rolex but if it were me I'd definitely go with the midsize DateJust in TT!!!

You should see what she likes to wear...  The mid-size is somewhat trendy and usually only seen on the younger set

At the Womens clubs that Pam visits, and at the Country Club where we see a lot of 60+ women, I can't say I have seen any with a mid-size...  almost all wear a Ladies size...

The Trophy wives and the daughters wear mid-size and full size more frequently, but even then, it is very much a lifestyle and particular "look", and certainly not the norm...

...........  There is also a cultural "Look" on watch styles that I will not get into....

That's kind of what I'm wondering, too, Larry - whether she would prefer a 26mm.  Especially in my part of the country... I asked Dave more about her tonight and he says she's pretty practical, average size, and not a "glitzy" type at all.  I keep thinking "Lady DJ...."

Well, then trendy may not be a good idea.
Lion

Maybe staying conservative is the best way to go!!!
mfer

I don't think it is trendy, just more realistic.  Now, some of the uber huge watches, yes, but this isn't big.  It is 31mm.

To me it doesn't look too much bigger than the 26mm.... anyway, I've asked my husband to do some more spying - I need a report on what color jewelry she wears, if any, and what her existing watch looks like, if she has one.
DSJ

I'd personally stick with a 26mm for an older woman.

The wife only wears mid-sizes, but unfortunately for her, I am the trophy.  On another note.  She started losing weight last November and went from a size 12, to a size 10, and now fits into her old size 6 jeans.  Me?  I need a blue bill to get any type of size.

That's a coincidence, the Arabs get their "P's"and "B's"mixed up.

I remember that. Wow - she's down to a size 6?? Holy cow, remind me how she did that again?

I'm still a size 12.

Don't let her get too skinny, Joe.  She's tall!

Okay Joe, stop drooling!!!

Lisa, any update?
Lisa

Not yet, Martin.  I'll ask Dave about it.

Believe me when I tell you that she will be bowled over by your generosity.  Particularly for someone who has never owned a Rolex, she will be thrilled to own such an upscale brand as well as deeply touched by your thoughtfulness.  After all, she would never anticipate receiving such a treasure.  Also, unlike the rest of us, she's not llikely spending hours on a Rolex forum looking at pictures of watches, agonizing over bezel selection and whether or not to purchase a 26 mm or 31 mm.  I honestly don't think you can make a mistake purchasing a traditional 26 mm, but you might make a mistake purchasing a 31 mm IMHO.  I'm attaching a picture of my watch which I've worn almost exclusively since I purchased it a couple of months ago.  (I inadvertently left the plastic protectors on in this picture.)  For a first watch you might want to consider TT, which will give her the flexibility to wear YG or WG, and I might want to pair it with a simple white dial (All the white dials are stark, easy to read, classic and will match with anything she wears.)  Keep in mind, that she isn't likely perceiving the watch in the same way in which we, Rolex fans, tend to do.  Whatever you do - barring the purchase of the leopard model - I feel sure will be most appreciated.

Lisa

Faith, your DJs are both very pretty and classic.  Dave just had a meeting with his group two nights ago and they couldn't come to a decision about getting her a Rolex - a few were concerned about spending that much, though it would amount to about $150 for each person to pitch in.  To put that amount in perspective, this woman has put several thousand more dollars into each person's pocket this year through her diligence in identifying billing and coding errors, collection problems, and ultimately through finding the group practice a new and more efficient billing company.

More to come.... many in the group all very keen on the idea of giving her a DJ - and I agree; given her age and what I know of her demeanor, a 26mm would suit her.
Tools

An Omega is a really nice consideration too..

And it would only cost the cheap so-and-so's about half out of pocket ..............
Lion

Lisa, definitely have Dave push the associates into spending the extra on a Rolex she sure sounds like she is worth the extra effort!!!
