Refinishing the ceramic ?

I've recently heard that the GMT ceramic is "fired" in the bezel, so replacement of an insert, ala the 16710, is probably not an option.

But this brings up the question of refinishing. I know that the ceramic is polished after the numbers are sprayed..

Would this also mean that the bezel can be "refinished" some set number of times just as the bracelet and case can be refinished ??

I would imagine that once a ceramic is finished, it's so hard that further work would be impractical.

It's supposed to be "unscratcheble" so I shouldn't need refinishing...

If the ceramic is similar that used on law enforcement badges (and some jewelry) I doubt the bezel can be refinished. The ceramic used in these is actually a fine powder and once it's fired it turns to a liquid, filling all the crevices. Once it hardens it is scratch resistant, but there is a potential downside. Being so hard, it makes the ceramic more likely to being broken by a sharp blow.

I suppose it may be possible to polish the ceramic but I wouldn't think it very practical, as the depth of the numbers is probably fairly shallow.

I guess I'm the source of that information having read it on TZ. It's an interesting question Larry. I would guess it would be pretty hard to refinish the ceramic.
Should one scratch it in some manner, it would seem the only recourse would be a new one which would also involve a new bezel--$$$

Well..

I have just heard from a Rolex employee that the ceramic is indeed an insert that can be replaced..

I guess the new inovations require a learning curve..

Both statements have come from very reliable sources...

I believe a new ceramic bezel insert costs around $300.

Have you ever heard of a ceramic bezel breaking? I'm getting a little nervous about my 50yr anniversary GMT II.
