Thoughts/Opinions On Nikons NX Editing Compared To PhotoshopWell, as a relatively inexperience user of any editing software , I'm finding Nikons version so much easier to get to grips with! love the "control points"  never understood layers really  never really understood PS to be honest it's sheer complexity was its downside to me  i can appreciate as far as unreal manipulation of the image is concerned PS would be far superior but IMHO for getting the" best" out of a natural image, it has an easy an intuitive selection of all the essentials, not as slick looking or complex as PS, but I'm right in my comfort zone, an excellent tool for those that know what there doing and on the flip side a great software for those who could do with some help with an easy learning curve. works for me!........ equates to improved images
steve [Adrian if you've got the time indeed inclination would you care to do a comparison editing using all of PS editing power Vs NX and your conclusions, you can't get more natural images than your birdlife i'd be interested in your opinions and the end products] |

The first time I used NX was yesterday when I was in Bahrain, the bluethroat was processed with it. I'm more used to Photoshop and I find PS easier to use funnily enough, especially CS3. If I did a comparison I don't think it would be a good test as I'm sure an NX expert could equal some of the editing I do with CS3, whereas I might not be able to manipulate it as well.

I could see myself mastering Nikons NX but never the complexity of PS guess time and inclination comes into the equation, guess if you're already proficent with one application you're already in your comfort zone but do believe most would be more than pleased starting out with Nikons NX if having known none other or are finding PS overwhelming.
The Blue throat was the one most found appealing  that may have been down to the colours i guess rather than any PP advantage  loving the colours out of the D300

It was in the best lit position. Both the snipe and the heron were taken an hour earlier when the light was far too strong but with secretive birds like those, you take the opportunity when it arises.
With CS3, I use it as far as my comfort zone goes. I'd never utilise all it's complexities but those I do use come easier now than they did when I first started using it. Mike (valentino) is much more into it than me. I'd say that pound for pound NX was probably better, although I find it slow on some of my computers.

I've just worked on the same picture in CS3 and here's the result.
I noticed on the first picture, the grass below the birds tail is completely burnt out. On the second image it's just right. Also the colours on the first one are far too vivid, the second one is more natural. I think I'll change the image on Bird Forum, where the original first one is hosted. |

much nicer and natural image i too have found "vivid" a bit OTT preferring standard +2-3 for a more natural shot with still some colour pop.

I downloaded and printed this out last night you might want to think twice several hundred full colour illustrated pages ,several ink cartridges later but a real nice clear instruction guide will make for good reading in the" bathroom" or is it just me
