Sight And A TZ Post That Made Me Smile In The New Year

Quote From  "OP"
Perhaps a dumb question, but why is the Meteorite dial on the WG Daytonas so much more expensive than most of the other dials?

Quoted Reply that made me smile

Rolex is an in-house manufacture, right? Jan 02, 2008 - 03:12 AM

And everyone knows that in-house manufacture watches are better.

So how do you get an iron-nickel alloy with those characteristic bands?

First of all, you make the iron and nickel in a super-nova Then you need to compact it, melt it, cool it slowly, and get the asteroid into an earth-intersecting orbit.

Swiss zoning regulations are quite strict about building a super-nova in the basement of a watch factory - and you want it for cheap? Sheesh.

Thanks for clearing that up Steve, it's something I've often wondered about.

Great picture of that beautiful watch.

That dial is very impressive!

Please tell me, is it really made from a slice of meteorite or are Rolex a having a laugh?

for sure!!! Rolex own there own substanial chunk of " The Gibeon Meteorite" guess  when its gone its gone though! it's sliced etched them mounted onto a brass back plate so as to reinforce the fragile nature of such a thin slice of rock, IMHO i would say it takes some skill to produce each dial with a large wastage due to the fragile nature of the sliced stone and any QC issues, its not just one piece if you look carefully each of the 3 sub dials are also individual pieces of Gibeon Meteorite so the main dial also needs to be cut out
