The 1680

I have to admit this is my favorite diver.

Introduced circa 1967-68 The wonderfull reference 1680 was the first diver to have a date feature. Powered by the workhorse 1570 slow beat movement and using the friction fit bi-directional bezel, the 1680 was unique with it's "tall" acryllic crystal.

Early versions were notable by the distinctive "RED" Submariner and now command quite a premium in the collector's arena. Circa 1974 Rolex switched to the more familiar "WHITE" Submariner we see today.

Early versions came with a non-hacking movement with Rolex gradually switching over to the hacking movement beginning in the early 70s.

You just gotta love that crystal.

Beautiful..

My very first Rolex in ~1972 was a 1680 Sub, and my main wear for almost 20 years.. (athough I did go two tone in the late 80's)

Had I been wearing it in the early '90's during a burglary, I would probably still be wearing it regularly, I just love the look........

I hope to run across one in good condition one of these days......

uncle aj

We have a guy at work who wears one as his daily beater.
As a result the watch is pretty beat up.

Aren't the service crystals a little different that the originals on the 1680 Mike?

Originals had a bit of a bevel. It's my understanding some of the newest service replacements also have gone back to this.
