Marsh harrier

This morning I was in Bahrain with a friend photographing birds. We watched in awe as a marsh harrier swept down and grabbed a dove for lunch. He flew off into a nearby field to have his meal and we managed to get a few pictures before he flew off again. When he eventually stopped we managed to get quite close again and get a few more pictures.

Good looking bird... (great photos too)

That beak could do some serious damage..

How close did you actually get adrian, or are those cropped images.
Got a couple of kestrals at the back of us which are on my happy snapper list when my lens comes not sure I'd get close enough though

nice shots

I'd estimate the closest I got would be 50 yards although some of the flight shots were closer. The images are cropped as I was using a 500mm lens which was not quite long enough for the job.

Your/that lens doesn't have VR does it? so guess you used a tripod or do you always use one when on a mission, where you pleased with your Nikon VR on longrange zoom shots, don't suppose you ever tried the VR lens on a panning bird in flight shot

Thanks [ sorry for the Qs]

Most of my shots are without a tripod, I don't own one. I do have a monopod but I don't use that as much as I should. The 500mm lens does not have VR but by resting it on a hide opening, I've taken very sharp pictures at 1/50th sec. The 300mm VR I have used a lot for flight shots and it's done the job magnificently. Usually I have a X2 converter fitted to the 300mm and even in this guise I can take reasonable shots without a tripod.
