My "Grail" watch...Based on what I have read on the various watch forums, almost everyone has a "Grail" watch. It appears that these Grail watches fall into this special category due to great expense, scarcity or age of the individual. The common thread seems to be "I'll have to save my money for a long time in order to afford it"...or "I hope that someday one will eventually become available"...or "I'll get one when I'm older and it's more age appropriate
I too have a grail watch and a few months ago I was thinking about seriously pursuing it. I mentioned this on another forum and that I was considering selling both of my TT DJ's to fund the purchase. I had anticipated that the DJ's wouldn't get much time in a rotation if I had my grail watch so there was no reason to keep them.
Tools suggested I only sell one until I was sure. After some serious consideration, I sold one of my DJ's ( as Tools suggested).
I have since purchased my grail watch and it is everything I thought it would be. It may not be as expensive or rare as some watches but it's one that I have wanted for some time. I've worn the DD for the past month and I'm extremely pleased with it. Therefore, have also decided to sell my remaining TT DJ.
I originally wanted a DD with a white dial and raised romans. However, the price on this one was exceptional so I decided to try the black dial. I've since discovered I do like the black dial but would still like to try the white. I have recently learned I cannot trade the black dial in for the romans. Evidently Rolex USA will not trade sticks for romans. I don't know if I should "bootleg" a white roman dial and find someone to swap it out or sell/trade it for another with the white dial.
Regardless, I'm very very pleased with the DD and it will now become my main watch.
Here's a few photos of my "Grail".

You have excellent taste!
Now, a black stick dial day-date costs the same as a white roman day-date... This is when you purchase new. Is it different on the secondary market?

Nice watch John and I like the black dial. I think it takes the "bling" off the watch and gives it character.

iconic! ,I do think the white dial/romans gives a more dressy look though IMO, although you don't get the same lume/functionality, guess there comes a point where lume becomes an impediment to style. I too would find it hard to reach for the DJ if i owned a DD

I agree with AJ..
The black dial is stulnning and classy. A bit less in-your-face than the white dialed gold examples..
It's a real beauty..

Thank you for your kind words.
Yes, they cost the same but according to my AD if you want to change dials Rolex USA will only allow you to trade sticks for sticks and romans for romans. This applies to a new watch as well as a used one.

Id be inclined to speak with Rolex direct, guess it may be different here but if the watch was origanaly available with that dial configuration you can px or buy outright any dial of your choice retaining the origanal in the complete range

Yes John, you're right, partially... You can trade anything for stick, nothing for roman.
Like, lets say you have a black roman dial, and you want a white roman dial, you cannot do that. You could only go to a stick dial or plain diamond dial (with plain I mean no MOP or other specialty dials).
But I do like your black stick dial, I wouldn't change it if I were you!
