Lenses...

So...finally made up my mind (sort of... )

I sold some of my vintage Omega's to create a fund for a new camera.
A Canon 40D or 50D is what's on the list..

But what lenses do I need?

Do I need more then one lens?

Of course you do, now you have the bug.

Now you'll need a macro for those fine watch shots, maybe a wide angle for those fine landscapes and something around 70 - 100mm for portraits.  These are just for starters.  I'm not well up on Canon lenses but I'm sure they do a very versatile zoom of 18 to 200mm that will cover a whole range of shots.

Thanks Adrian...

Is there a tabel of some kind to explain the several lenses and what they are used for?

Canon do a 18-200mm but have a look at Sigma's 18-200mm OS Lens. My wife uses it on her 400D and it is very good.

Thanks for the tip Colin....

Don't forget the suitcase you'll need to carry it all..

For that camera, Canon makes a respectable 28-135 lens that covers a broad range of typical shots...

Hey, congrats on the 50D, Gerard - it's one nice bit of kit.

Reading through the other threads, I gather that you're after one lens, for starters at least.

I'd go with Colin's recommendation of the Sigma 18-200 OS - the range covers most of what most people normally need, and the optical stabilisation can be handy.  I used it with the 400D as well, and it can produce some decent pictures:

All of the above were taken with the Sigma 18-200 and the 400D.  The 400D's no slouch, but the 50D's alot more capable and can produce even better results.

One thing to note about the Sigma is that because it isn't at its sharpest when the aperture is wideopen, you do need to drop it down to between f/8 and f/11 for best results, and this will come at the expense of low-light performance.  That said, if you wanted something that performs better in low light, it'll cost you a lot more and you won't get that much zoom range, so it's a good lens, all things considered.

If you're taking landscape shots on your walks, the lens I'd recommend after the 18-200 is Sigma's 10-20mm lens.  The 8mm difference between the wide-angle setting on this lens and the 18-200 doesn't sound like much, but it's enough to squeeze in a lot more.

One thing to note is that while the 50D has weather seals built into the body, neither Sigma lens has a seal where the lens joins the body (some of Canon's L-series lenses have this seal), which means that you may still have to take some care if it rains.

Thanks for the tips and the wonderful pictures...
