LED lamp

Upon returning from our vacation there was a HUGE stack of mail waiting. Our home was tented to by Anne's niece (watering the pants and collecting the mail) and among the bills was an envelope from our utility company. Inside was a voucher for a LED lamp, to be collected at our local supermarket. LED lamps are the next step from the now common 'energy saving' lamps. All our lighting is either those lamps or 12 V halogen.

The LED lamp looks like a common light bulb, bar the metal collar at the bottom. I read the brochure that came with it and thought, "yeah, sure". But after I screwed it in my opinion changed. I tell you, this is the future! It consumes only 6 Watts but is equal to a common 60 Watt light bulb. Bright white light and it can even be dimmed. Life span is 50,000 hours!

The snag for now is the price: ca. $45 a pop    But as soon as the price comes down all the lamps in our home will be replaced by LED lamps.

The company that designed the lamp has been awarded a huge contract. They will replace all the lighting in government buildings in the four major cities in The Netherlands.

This is it, this must be our future. The energy and environmental savings are huge

Frans, here in America most families are still using incandescent bulbs and are slowly switching over to fluorescent bulbs. I guess we are behind the times.....

Interesting Frans I have heard of LED lights in office style lamps and garden lights but did not realise you could get them as replacement bulbs. I googled some prices and they work out as approx £30 a bulb for an equivalent  60 watt bulb. Like you I will wait but the energy savings are remarkable, it has to be the way forward

Wow - I have been waiting for a decent LED to become available! The ones I have seen here have not impressed me.

How is the light output on that bulb? Can you read by it? Or is it more decorative?
uncle aj

I've still got a few boxes of candles, I'll wait a while.

Just like a normal bulb, very usable as a replacement. But the expense is still very prohibitive. I remember though, that the first 'jam jar' energy saving Philips lamps were just as expensive. But this is still the first generation of lamps. In 5 years most of the bulbs will be LED. Until someone discovers a snag I think this is the way to go. In this respect Indonesia is a forerunner. Everywhere you go you see energy saving lamps albeit with an output that is too low, making road side shops and little stores a bit dark. But they are used to it.

Frans, that's exciting!    (obviously, I don't get out much... )

Yes, whoo-hoo-hoo
Deep Sea

When I was in Korea in 2002, all of their billboards were the superbright LED's, and they were blindingly bright.  I'm actually surprised it has taken this long for it to trickle down to the consumer level.

All of my flashlights now are LED, and they are as bright, if not brighter, than my xenon bulb normal lights.

By any chance, can you take a picture of the bulb (turned off)?

Cool!  Thanks.  Now they need to bring the price down to less than $10 and I'm in!

Frans do the LED lights come in different wattages to give you more or less light???

Yes, this brand has 4 and 6 Watt models. But they can be dimmed as well to cater for different situations. (For those, mmmmm, Barry White moments   ).

Frans, thanx for the information. We have been using the fluorescent bulbs that produce white light in are fixtures/lamps and use less watts. My next question is since I'm used to the light output from incandescent bulbs, what is the watt equivalent in your LED bulbs???

Here's a link to Amazon:

4 = 40
6 = 60

Frans, Thank you for you answers, the LED lights do seem to be the future but the U.S. is always behind the times!!!

The price now is just way too high    Even though they last 25 years or so....
Lion

Frans, if you divide the price by the number of years they last it only works out to $2.40 US funds per year. That doesn't sound to bad!!!

I know, and if you deduct the savings in electricity (compared to a normal lamp) they are free    But I need 8 to start with, still a lot of money.

Frans, I totally agree the cash outlay is a lot but so are your benefits!!!
Carolina

Prices really should go down, I would think! And no mercury, which is nice.

In the US, the ban on incandescent bulbs should be complete by 2014..

The price on Compact Fluorescents has come down quite a bit since the ban was announced a couple of years ago, so I would hope that LED technology and market pressures would also bring down those prices..

In another 5 years, there won't be much choice on what the cost is.... they'll be the only show in town..

or maybe just like booze, cigarettes and prescription meds... people will just import them from across the border......

..........  then I suppose that we'll have to put up with the light bulb cartels

Frans? Al wants to know if the LED lights are directional?

I'd like to know how many lumens does an LED bulb produce???

The 4 Watt version produces 230 Lumen. I came across the number for the 6 Watt version somewhere but can't find it anymore.

The bulbs are semi-directional. I use it with a lampshade and there is a small dark zone. I do hope companies like Ikea pick this up and make the lamps more affordable

Frans, Thanx....
Carolina

Interesting. I read that a 60 watt incandescent bulb is about 800 lumens, so it doesn't seem as if the light output corresponds.

Here is a link to a chart re: light output, and CFL/incandescent comparison:
