High Dynamic Range (HDR)

This is my first attempt at HDR.  I used Manchester town hall as my subject and created three Tif images at different exposure values.  It's not up to the experts standards yet but it's a begining.  :thumb:

I've just tried the same method on one of my swallow pictures.  The result is below.

I like the little bird! So cute!
The sky by the town hall looks very intimidating!

I did another one of the town hall but in Photoshop CS3 and Photomatrix tonal mapping.  I prefer this one.

ABS

Yeah I like the second one better as well! Good work unc!

Those are some great looks..

I guess I need to read up on HDR techniques...

what does HDR imaging achieve  could you post an origanal compared to a HDR image to explain to this idiot is it a complex edit or can it be relatively simple?

My connection is rubbish at the moment but when it's better I'll do that.  Till then check out this link.

I've done a quick process on a small jpeg I had on my computer.  The top picture is the original and the bottom after the process has been applied.  There's a lot of fine tuning that can be done to achieve different results and it works better if you use 3 original RAW files.  Anyway it gives you an idea of how the tones are spread throughout the picture.

Mmmm  you don't think you could get the same effect through normal manipulation /PS editing ? is there a real/major benefit of one over the other methods

As I said, the picture I used was a small Jpeg.  It works really well on landscapes using 3 RAW images.

I got hold of a royalty free image that is better suited to HDR tan the ones I used.  This is only pseudo HDR using just one image but I think it demonstrates what can be achieved.  If three RAW files had been used you would get a better final result.
