Heron on the huntThese aren't the best quality because the light today was poor and the surrounding isn't the best, not to mention my limited ability but I stalked this guy for quite a while and was glad I could capture this sequence. These birds are very wary of people and will usually take off at the first sign of people so thankfully he was somewhat tolerant of my presence.
Looks like he has his eye on something
Got it
Down it goes

You are right about them being shy, I can't get within 100 yards of them before they are off. Nice sequence.

Great shots......
If he wasn't blue, you would see him......... he blends in with the surroundings nicely........

Thanks! Now that I look at these a little more closely it looks like the focus was more on his chest than his head. He was moving around as he was positioning the fish to swallow it so I missed the focus. It was fun to watch though. Too bad but maybe next time...

Sometimes it pays to switch to "Manual Focus". If the head moves, then the camera doesn't try to focus on a new spot.

You might also try the AI Servo mode........ The camera should always then, focus on the center spot, so long as there is enough light.
Still, good shots.....

I actually was using AI Servo but I think maybe the low light and his moving around caused the focus to be a little off. It all happened pretty quickly so either the camera or myself were a little too slow for this guy. The AI Servo is usually a life saver though. I don't how they did it before all these technological goodies came along.
