Great Blue Heron rookery in downtown Richmond!I just found out about this spot and there must be a 100 GBH in the area. It's a wonder that any fish make it south of Richmond. There's also a couple of Egrets nesting in the same spot and a pair of Osprey on a power line tower a few hundred yards away. These guys generally like to nest in more remote areas but for some reason they picked this spot. They started nesting here in 2006 and in 2008 there were 38 nests.

Spectacular flight shots Mike! Grey herons are very difficult to get close to here, they are easily spooked. The same with mallards of all things, it must be because mankind in this part of the world is not that kind at all.
