Good News-- I got a job!!As some of you guys know, I've been a property developer for the last 7 years or so. I've done pretty well out of it, but the house I've been working on for the last 2 yrs has really pulled on mine and Lou's heart strings. We love it so much we've decided to stay!
With that in mind I have had to find some employment. Before I started the developing, I ran my own building company, which again, I did pretty well out of, so I had some thoughts to start that up once more. I've had loads of people in the village wanting me to do work on their houses. However, as some of you guys know, running your own business is quite stressful, for me the clients have always been fine, its been the employees that have caused the stress. Lou has MS, and although she is generally well, stress plays a big part in her well being, and so I've been applying to work for other people to try and take that out of the equation.
Its been a long process, we all know how the economy has been and still remains.
Anyway, I finally managed to find a great job, I'm starting as a trainee systems controller for Eurotunnel on Monday. I'm usually quite self deprecating, but I'm really pleased with myself for a change. I had to go through a very vigorous interview process ; an interview in french (amazed my self there, I have'nt spoken it since school), a long and detailed application form, some intelligence tests (again amazed myself by passing!), and two long interviews, one with the department head, and one with an outside agency that was more like an interrogation. There were over 650 applicants for 6 jobs (again, state of the economy).
Not sure what its going to be like working for 'the man' again after so long (about ten years in total), but i'm excited and nervous at the same time.
My training lasts for 6 months, and I'm going to be tested the whole way through, so can you please keep your fingers crossed that I keep it together.

Merci bien mes amis!
I feel very fortunate to have been offered it. I know lots of people that have lost jobs over the last year and there has been plenty of discussion on this forum about it too.
I'll let you all know what kind of deal I can get on travelling when I start. I'd be happy to help any of you great people out

If I'd known you were hiring Joe (Bills' lay off thread) I'd have tapped you up for a job, I always fancied kissing sailors for a living
Thanks guys, your good wishes are much appreciated.
Leo, Eurotunnel operate the train line between England and France. When I finish the training I'll be working in a room that looks very like a Bond villains hide out, its a large circular room with a massive l.e.d. layout of the track/trains and safety lines, with banks of computers laid out in semi circles facing it. I'll let you all know how I get on taking over the world from there

Mark, not to take a dim view of your fortune, but was the Eurotunnel where that disastrous truck explosion happend a few years back? I remember watching a Discovery Channel (I think it was) progam about it this past summer.

Thanks Lisa Seriously though, it was a freight train and no-one was injured, (except the stock holders wallets) the safety procedures are incredible and a testament to the amazing engineering design that is at work there. They can open and shut different sections of the tunnel all the way through to contain any fires, and the whole place is air pressured so that the other tunnels can't catch light when opening the doors in between the main tunnels and the service tunnels
And thanks Nancy:thumbup:

Mark, I might be thinking of another tunnel... but it definitely was a truck - carrying margarine or butter and when that stuff ignited it created a deadly blaze.... I do believe there were many fatalities. Sorry I have such a bad memory... I even tried a google search but didn't find any information.
Anyway, your job sounds very exciting and interesting... sorry to go off on a tangent but my brain's self editing function isn't working well at the moment....

Mark, Thanx for the explanation and I know you will do a great job. Just don't let Jimbo by the controls or I'm sure there will be trouble. Think "Casey Jones".....
