Decorating/Furniture Advice Needed

I admit, I have no idea what I am doing when it comes to decorating.  Last week I went to Crate and Barrel and the woman who showed me around, Jordan, told me she was an art professor.  Her taste was incredible, not just with colors, but with proportions.  After walking around with her for an hour, I found a sofa, a gorgeous lush area rug and a chair.  The chair and sofa cost over $6,000, not including the rug, tables, lamps and pictures.  Am I the only one who thinks this is excessive?  The problem is I went to several furniture stores after this, including the Pottery Barn, and nothing I saw I liked as much as this initial sofa and chair.  Do you have recommendations?  Do you know of any stores nationwide with decent furniture?  Would you bite the proverbial bullet & buy the sofa and chair from Crate and Barrel?  Thanks.
BigBird

My sofa came from a 1968 Chrysler.  Not sure I would be a lot of help.

Then it's probably roomy and in a neutral color.  I'd be happy with that - send it to me if you're done with it.

I won't be much help.... most of our stuff came from the junk/antique shops!  We did get one new chair and ottoman, made by Ethan Allen, but I was a little disgusted with how expensive it was... the quality of decent antique furniture can hardly be beat with the new stuff, but I just could not believe how expensive new furniture was.

Would Crate and Barrel be willing to bargain any?  Maybe if you ask they'll offer a discount.
BigHat

Well, for those of us that quantify value in terms of horsepower, precious metal content / complications or screen size / volume levels, furniture prices can be disconcerting.  I do have a very good friend (wife of one of my best friends) that does interior design for rich folks (for sure not me) and this is what I've gleaned from her.

1.  Huge mark-up on the stuff.  At least she tells me these prices are very much negotiable.

2.  Now could it be worth $6,000?  Sure, but maybe not.  Seems that price stems both from quality of construction and designer panache.

Taffi,
You ever notice ads on TV for furniture?  As an avid Red Sox fan I get bombarded with them on the New England Sports Network.

For example, you'll see a lounge chair  that sells for $199 that looks a lot like a Barcalounger or Lazy Boy one at $1,500.  I think that's the quality difference and better to pay the money (after a bit of a discount) on the quality piece.  Now if you want "furniture art" you can spend tons more.  To stay in the same lounge chair analogy, at the low end of this part of the spectrum would be an Eames chair at I think about $5K.

http://www.hermanmiller.com/Products/Eames-Lounge-Chair-and-Ottoman

You didn't mention the brand, fabric, etc but I'm thinking that's high for Crate and Barrel furniture, but again, I don't follow that stuff very much.

Now, if you need help with the music system....

Sometimes I find it helpful to use my cell phone camera to take pictures of things I want to compare. We are on the 5 year plan. We buy a couch and loveseat every 5-6 years for approx $1000.00. We use it up and when we're done we get another.
Carolina

I love Crate and Barrel. That being said, I find their prices very high. Unfortunately, on the other end of the spectrum is the low end stuff - particle board furniture.

We've had great luck with furniture sample stores - places that get high end samples and overstocks. We got a nice, heavy solid wood dining table for $200. I also look for clearance sales on last year's stuff at places such as Pier One, Crate and Barrel, etc. We also got our living room furniture at the outlets in NC for decent prices. We got the dining chairs for half price on clearance from World Market.

I hope this is somewhat helpful. I am by no means a interior designer!!

Martin,

You're so right, Martin.  In the spirit of altruism, I will step down and allow the back seat to go to its appropriate final destiny.  After all, the Center for Disease Control has a far greater need for it than any one individual.  .

Caroline,

I love that sofa and chair and will go back and negotiate for those pieces.
You say you are not a decorator, but I have a sense your house is very nicely put together.  Lisa also stated she's not a decorator and the pictures of her house were extremely attractive.  Could I possibly coax you two to post pictures.  Perhaps others will also post pictures of their house's interior.  Always fun to look at and may give me some ideas.  Toodle, Poodles.

Will do later tonight!

Pah, make fun of the old man and his petrified wood...furniture.   It is still classified as an antique.     I am strting to wonder if I can get the local historical organization to come over and declare it a civil war shrine.

I should have taken the time to use spell check.

I'll do that Faith. Years ago we bought a beautiful couch and matching chair at a warehouse type store. The brand name was one of quality and the price was decent. One day at work I was showing some pics of a family event and a co-worker commented that he and his wife had bought exactly the same set. I said...."Gotta love "so and so" for furniture, eh?" He was stunned. They had bought theirs from a classy, expensive local furniture store and as it turned out, had paid almost $400 more for the set than we had.

That's kinda neat actually, Bill. You don't have to wait too long to get something new!!! Our family room couch and chair is still ok, but it has couch covers on it because it was sort of off-white originally, and over the years the gas heating has yellowed the color. It's about 25 years old easily! Problem is, it's still as sturdy as when it was brand new so there's really no good reason to replace it....not for a family room!
East Bay Rider

Our house is so small we spend all our time in the livingroom. We just plain wear it out.

Lisa

Bill, are those knotty pine cabinets in the kitchen I see?  Hmm?? Hmmm???
Lisa

I'll dig out some of the pics I took a while back, Faith - but you've already seen them, though.  I need to get some new ones of the living room because we have a couple of new pieces of furniture in there - like that stinkin' overpriced chair and ottoman.

Yes the cabinets are knotty pine and so is the ceiling. There are 2 beams that run across with old fashioned square nails that we hang pans and baskets on.

My girlfriend called this evening and recommended I extend my search to Macy's.  When I went to the furniture department this evening, the sales lady was a trip.  She was seated on a sofa and when I told her what I was looking for (and making no attempt to get up) she said, "Look over there."  Then she turned to another customer and said "Show this woman the living room set I just showed you."  I'm thinking, "Stay right there, you beast, don't bother to move your fat _ss on my account!"  (Wanna buy a vowel?)

Turned out she finally got up and showed me some items.  She also told me I had absolutely no taste whatsoever.  (Ok, tell me something I don't know.)  I looked at a chair and her remark was "Stay away from that piece of sh_t!"  Despite her attitude . . . make that because of it, I listened to her and she had great taste.  I put together a preliminary order and she asked me my last name.  I told her and  true to her blatant lack of manners and complete insensitivity asks, "Are you Jewish?"  "Yes," I told her before she went off on this half English half Yiddish rant about her husband - Herb the moron.  I also had to listen to how Gloria's sister acquired several pieces of Louis Vuitton luggage while poor Gloria only had an LV handbag.   She also boasted that she is 75 years.  "Really?" I asked, why she didn't look a day over 85.

Well, I think I found the sofa, loveseat and recliner I want (6 month wait since I special ordered the color).   And if you find yourself in or around the Philadelphia area in 6 months, do stop by and Taffi and I will give you a tour.   As far as Gloria is concerned, she is rude, tactless, a character with a good heart.  I see my future in a number of years and it is Gloria - minus the good taste.    , Faith

I need to purchase a vowel because I am laughing mine off right now...

Knotty pine is so warm and vintage-ey.... lucky guys!  Was it original to the house or was it put in at a later remodel?

There is one wide leaf that we add during the holidays. We got the table and chairs from Wendrfull's mom when she moved to Florida. Before that we had a big empty room that Ethan liked to play in.

It's not original. My house was built in 1900.
The guy we bought the house from was a carpenter and he'd remodeled the kitchen 4 years before. We were lucky. Like I've said before the house is tiny but it's a very good house. It seems reasonable for us to have a small good house than a larger house that needs more attention.
We closed on the house Oct. 30 1998 so it's almost 11 years now.

Well.... maybe first off I'd see if there's any paint left in that can on the floor.... then I'd spray "Kilroy was here" on the window, remembering to write backward - you just can't underestimate the benefit of curb appeal.

How about a closeup of that wedding photo?

Small, but we love the joint. Al tells me about once a month that he wishes we had a bigger dining room though.   Funny how evening lighting is......those walls are all slightly dark grey, but look so blue in some of the pictures. I don't see that when I'm IN the room, but the pics are that way. Either that or my camera's not that great.

Bill, your house is lovely, you and your wife have great taste!

Nancy, I love that skyline mirror and the mix of new and old furniture

Faith, Lou and I had two sofas made when we got married. We found some that we liked in a very expensive store and had a local furniture maker fabricate them to our dimensions (we're both quite tall). Saved ourselves a lot of money that way. if you haven't already ordered, that might be a good idea for you too.

Bill and Nancy,

Very nice homes with great decorations and a very homey (make that "homie") feel.  No "gangsta" here!  Also, you guys are brave to have light furniture.  I'd be afraid of getting newsprint  or dog prints all over everything.  I can see your guests feeling very relaxed as both your environments appear inviting and conducive to good conversation.  Very, very nice.

Stunning, Caroline! I LOVE that small table and chairs in the window alcove and could easily imagine how peaceful it would be to sit there with coffee in the early hours of the day before morning chaos starts!

I love your kitchen countertop and backsplash. What IS that?
Carolina

Thanks, Nancy! The countertop is actually a marbled laminate that the previous owner put in when he updated the kitchen. My mom actually put a hot pan on it, 'cuz she thought it was granite!
Carolina

Nancy, that spot in the kitchen is my favorite as well. I usually put the laptop there, or hang out there when a friend comes over for tea.
away36

The family room downstairs is very casual. We spend almost all our time hanging out down there because that's where the TV is. The computer desk setup is a bit chaotic right now as Al is presently sort of half way through cleaning out his den and prepping it for painting so he's using my desk for his computer and junk and I'm currently using my laptop at the dining room table. I'm sure he'll have the job done soon.

A few pics of the hallway at the bottom of the stairs leading into the family room and the room itself.

Yes Caroline, it's the basement area. We were very lucky. The previous owners had just recently finished the whole area so it was brand new for us. The only thing not left done was some trim around the cold storage doorway and some of the baseboards. Al is going to finish that off, but there's no rush. We've only been here 9-1/2 years.

The white closed door next to my desk area is actually where Al's den is. The door behind the leather chair is a good sized cold storage room. There's also a small bit of storage area under the stairs coming down from the kitchen. It's not closed off, but I can put stuff in there and it's sort of "behind the wall" if you know what I mean. The area is carpeted as it's all part of the hall. It currently has a baby "exersaucer", a few picnic coolers and a big garbage bag of Christmas lights!

There's a full sized laundry room/workshop area as well that's about 24' x 15' or so.
Lion

I've decided to walk on the wild side as my new sofa and love seat are a light camel and I also ordered a recliner with an ottoman in a deep mahogany.  These pieces are very modern looking with clean, minimalist lines.  I'm also on a missiion to find a nice area rug and other accessories.

Everyone's house has a nice, traditional and welcoming feel that says, "Come in, have a nice herbal tea or some coffee, please make yourself comfortable and relax a while.  Later on let's check in to watch Dr. Oz on Oprah."  How can so many exhibit such good taste?  Did you learn this from parents?  Is it in your DNA?  Are you hiding a degree in interior design?

Well, thanks Colin!  I do declare I discovered one of the accessories for my new decorating scheme.
Carolina

Yeah, but I'll bet Faith's new sofa smells better than Mr Camel!

Faith, our decorating strategy was simple - clean lines, clutter(no) , and comfy.

Faith, we need a real interior pic of your place!  How's about it?  Hmmm?

You have my word that after the new furniture arrives, I will post pictures.  In the interim, all I can say is my rugs are beige, my current sofa is a slightly different shade of beige and my walls are off white.  BORING!  (My wardrobe is equally boring -  khakis, button-down shirt and loafers daily.  The only way you know it's winter is when you see me with a sweater or tweed blazer over the shirt.) I've decided to walk on the wild side as my new sofa and love seat are a light camel and I also ordered a recliner with an ottoman in a deep mahogany.  These pieces are very modern looking with clean, minimalist lines.  I'm also on a missiion to find a nice area rug and other accessories.

Hey, I love khakis, button downs, and loafers. I guess I'm still a prep at heart!!
Lisa

Here's our living room.  Finally have some of the finishing touches done.  We've yet to get some kind of coffee table in front of the couch, but eventually we will - right now it's a good lounging area for the kids.

I love Jacobean-style patterns (I think it's called) and don't worry too much whether they match very well or not.  Maybe I ought to!

Taffi Abernathy

Whoa, what a cozy looking room.  Two questions:  Who plays piano?  Did you have any help putting that room together?
Lisa

Thanks, Faith.  I think it needs some cohesion, but I'm not sure how to fix that...

Nobody plays piano very well, but I can still read music and hope to spend more time at it when the kids get older.  Hopefully at least one of the three will take an interest in piano.

I'm sure both you Caroline and Faith dress way better than I do. I'm kind of what you call early hippy in dress code but without the long hair.....

I have really enjoyed a peek at everyone's home interiors. They all look great and have that lived in feeling. Now all we need is a look at Bigbird's garage to come full circle!!!
Carolina

Lisa, your living room gets better every time I see it!

Thanks, Nancy.  That was our most recent purchase but I don't think I matched the fabric very well with the rest of the room.

Leo, what are we talking here?  Nehru jacket?  Bell bottoms?  Love beads?  In certain parts of the country (most notably De Moines, Iowa), wearing this attire in public carries with it a stiff fine and/or imprisonment.

Faith, very funny I enjoy your humor!!!
I did own a Neru jacket and bell bottom jeans back in 1969 but now all I wear is blue jeans, T-shirts and flannel shirts when it cold outside. I do not  own one suit or dress shoes and my few ties are all out of style.
Peace be with you..... is there a smiley for the two finger peace sign???

Are you having some kind of identity crisis Faith or am I totally missing something here?

Whoops!!!  Sorry for the double post I guess I must of pushed a wrong key.....

Me, I am a slave to fashion.
Taffi Abernathy

This thread is going to hell in a handbasket.  Permit me to clarify . . .  Leo made the comment speculating that Caroline and I were better dressed than him.  That's when I asked Leo if he was still wearing Nehru jackets, etc.  But when you highlight someone's quote, it sometimes copies as though it was initiated by another person.  (No doubt I have just doubled your confusion.  Leo, jump in here at any time.)

Could you dumb it down a bit so I could keep up between getting a beer, telling the wife she looks good in her Lynyrd Skynyrd tube top, explaining for the 10th time to the 13 year old how to use a condom, and by god, trying to order a bucket of hot wings from KFC.  Have some sympathy for this poor spelling redneck.

You were remiss in failing to mention "scratching your plumber's crack," something which you consider a bona fide activity.

Faith, when it comes to Bigbird it's a hopeless cause. He is just going to twist and manipulate the english language to the Nth power. And besides as for fashion what's available for a Bigbird!!!

How the hell do you know I have something for the next door neighbour.  Three rules of being a plumber.  Payday is on Friday.  Sheet don't run uphill.  And, never chew your finger nails.  See, I have other uses for PVC.  Now, where the hell is my hamster as gerbiles are so Richard Geer.

He is most definitely a good guy, but why admit that to him?
