Copperhead

I ran into this guy yesterday while hiking. I would guess he was approximately 20 inches or so. He was sunning himself in the middle of the trail and I was looking for Osprey which aren't exactly ground dwellers so I'm glad I just happened to spot him before stepping on him. From what I've read they aren't very deadly so I feel better now but I was keeping an eye on the trail a little more after running into him.

I'm surprised he held still for you long enough to get the pics.  How close were you?

I would say I was about 4-5ft. That's where the zoom comes in handy.  When I first walked up to him he started to move off the trail and I knelt down in front of him to take a shot and he stopped and stayed basically still for the next few minutes while I did my thing. I probably watched him for 5 mins or so and when I left he was still sitting there. Maybe he knows no one will mess with him.

No not like a Mojave green rattler but I would still hate to be bit by one....My friend was bit by a baby rattler in high school in his garage and said it felt like he put his hand on a stove top burner and left it there.....worst pain you could experice.

We have Mojave greens and Diamond backs around here....... although with so many people moved in, yo have to go out away from the city....

I usually don't hang around long enough to take a photo though..... maybe next time.......

Never see any Mojave greens on PHX area think they only up in high desert
maybe Wickenburg area before you start seeing them.
I know Kingman has them because I was getting in a truck and almost got it by one back when I was a teenager.
They are the North American Cobra as far as poison goes...
I remember reading in PHX newpaper about some 50 year old on a 4 wheeler that was struck on the ankle by one and died the next day.

Did I ever tell you, I hate snakes, Mike?  Yuk.

It would have been so hard for me to not try to take him home!

I'm not real partial to poisonous snakes and saw one of the rattlers on the bicycle trail this year. Needless to say every time I passed that area afterwards I was nervous!!!
