There's also the S90.

Yes, I'm tempted both ways. The images from the S90 are not quite as good as the G11 but the difference in size and weight are big pluses.

Here's a link to a sample of S90 images in low light and a couple of video reviews.
Canon S90
Oh I'm very tempted, the smaller size may be a big factor in my final decision. I want something I can carry around and quickly use as photography here is still a touchy subject. All I need is a 1024 x 768 image at 300 dpi for submission to our monthly camera club competition.
I've changed the title of the topic as it's now a debate on which to buy.

I can certainly see the benefits of the smaller size.. Those of us who shoot with SLR's are used to a certain quality and may see the G11 approaching that...... but then, it's almost the same as carrying around the SLR as the G11 just won't fit in a pocket..
The S90 seems to have some pretty good specs in a remarkably small size..
Price differences are about a wash... so, marginally less capability trade-off for a great size..
I notice the S90 is also capable of RAW, so that could sway me

There are some user reviews on Amazon.com, everyone gives it 5 stars. The only drawback I can see is there's no viewfinder and in bright light it might be difficult to see the screen to compose and focus.

That seems to be a coming trend though.. Even the latest crop of SLR's are coming with live view....
Pams Nikon P&S does not have a viewfinder and I usually slap it up to my face first, then have to stick it out in front of me like everybody else does now-days..
I think that with live-view, you almost have to rely on the autofocus, so it's important that the camera have some capability in spot focusing and metering.

One of the reviewers made a comment about having to rely on the autofocus, he said it worked great. I think I'm smitten. Old Ken Rockwell seems to love it but that's not always a good thing.

I didn't think that Rockwell liked anything Canon........... It may be high praise indeed, coming from him.........

Well it's almost decision time and I think I'll go with the G11. It's been a difficult choice but I think the better build quality, slightly better image quality, longer optical zoom and longer exposure settings for night work have tipped the balance. My friend goes back to the UK on Wednesday for two weeks and will bring me one back.

Call me Mr. Indecisive but I opted to wait until I can get my hands on one of these babies to decide which I like the feel of most. So until they come into the stores here or until I go home, the final decision is awaited.

Hmm... I need to research if either one has an underwater housing available.........
........ I mean, of couse, one that doesn't cost more than the camera..

The G11 does for sure.
I got my grubby hands on them this afternoon and I'd like a little more time with them before deciding. The G11 is built like a tank but is awkward to grip without pressing some of the buttons on the back. One happens to be the delete button. The optics look better G11 than the S90 even though the S90 is f2 and the G11 f2.8
The S90 had a fiddly wheel set up on the back and I found it too small for my hands. I couldn't check out the menus of either camera as they had been set up in Arabic so I hadn't a clue what was what. It definitely needs a second look and the menus changing to English before the final decision.
I'm really liking that one.... despite that it won't fit in the shirt pocket..
A granddaughter has a Thanksgiving play today and I feel a bit self-conscious carrying the Canon with the 70-200 lens.......... The other grandparents will be there with their discrete little P&S cameras....and I hoist up 10 pounds of howitzer.............
The G11 would be perfect and provide very adequate photos for this...
