African Oyster Catcher

Taken in Port Elizabeth, South Africa
uncle aj

Nice first post.  He's quite a lot different than our local ones, not having any white.  I notice he got a few rings on his legs as well.

Thanks for the compliment. These birds are considered endangered by 4x4's and traffic on the beaches (now banned), and they are subject to research in this area, hence the rings.

Thanks.  I wish them well, they are a great looking bird.

Very interesting bird! Does he really eat oysters?

Nice shot. That beak looks like it could do some damage to an oyster.

Among other things, yes.

He spits the pearls out.

Some feedback on this particular Oystercatcher: Met him on the beach again this morning, turns out he has a family (Mate and one chick). He lets me get quite close to himself to distract me from the others, and them leads me in the opposite direction to them by walking away but keeping a respectable distance between us.

He sounds like a good parent, good luck to him and his family.

Are you sure he doesn't store them in his craw? What a nice little fella.  My daughter likes him, too.  He's the colors of Oklahoma State University.
