A mixed bag

Larry told me to get out and take more pictures so I did.  Here's a mixed bag of what I got.

Pin-tailed whydha, a new exotic for Bahrain.  This bird is in a male in non-breeding plumage.  When they are breeding they grow an enormous tail, like a bird of paradise.  It would be nice to see one.

Yellow wagtail

Yellow-crowned bishop.  An exotic that's become established and is now considered a breeding bird of Arabia.

Ruff, a winter visitor from Scandinavia.

Female stonechat, possibly from Siberia.

The aptly named cutthroat finch, another escapee trying to establish itself.

Village indigobird.  (escapee)  These are a parasitic breeder, laying their eggs in a fire finches nest.  It will be interesting to see how they manage as we have not yet seen any fire finches.

Red-billed quelea.  These are now breading in the area and are the most abundant bird on the planet.  Huge flocks, sometimes in the millions descend on crops and devastate them.  We will have to keep an eye on these guys.

Namaqua dove, a resident, very small dove.  This one is a male.

Little ringed plover.  This one looks like it's got a cold.

Lesser short-toed lark.

I think I've got the camera and PP/Nikon Capture 2 sorted.  I'm also spending more time getting less birds.  A fault I used to have was to try to get as many shots of different birds as I could.  Now I take more care over my shots and wait for the birds to come to me, rather than chasing about trying to find the birds.  I have a favourite watering hole that I park up at, crouch down in the vehicle and wait.  This week I made the record books by getting the first recorded sighting of a mountain bunting, previously known as a striated house bunting.  Here's a picture of the bird and me celebrating after the Bahrain bird recorder, Howard King, went home and brought me a cold beer.
