I haven't posted here much, though now I really have a great understanding of why this website exists. It's been a while, but I just made a brief visit over to "TRF" to check out some of the topics.

And of course, the "new" topics were "show us your guns", which is a really ORIGINAL idea of members posting pictures of their arsenals, and another great topic "show us your Porsches", which is a rather pompous post which "assumes" that everyone owns a Porsche, just because some a-hole that's posting wants to show off HIS Porsche.

Anyway, the bottom line is that now I have a true and full understanding and appreciation of why Uncle AJ started this website. The two topics I recently viewed on TRF just confirmed his decision.

This is a kinder, gentler, and more sophisticated venue..

Nothing more controversial than coffee or tea....

How many times can they post the same "gun" question? And I love every time some new pompous member joins that forum, with the intention of showing off all his possessions, he has to post something like "show us your Porsche, show us your 3 million dollar beach front property, show us your obnoxious diamond cuff links, yada, yada, yada....

I'm sure some of us are secure enough with our financial situation where we don't have to flaunt it, or some of us simply have been able to purchase a Rolex and aren't that wealthy. But the new breed of member at "that" website has really ruined the entire atmosphere.

It's a great shame that those things have happened. I'm sure it's only a minority but it has ruined the forum. Still I'm sure they will survive and hopefully go on to better things.

BTW, I've moved this topic here as I thought it better suited to this forum.

I believe that the posters who post such trivia are truly interested in participating. They are caught up in the atmosphere and want to be part of the perceived excitement. Their knowledge of the forums main theme is limited so they pop in with whatever their main interest is....

From a forum perspective, you need to treat these posts and posters carefully because, right or wrong, they do make up the membership body. Some of the off topics can be very volotile, yet each member may have something to contribute to a more germaine topic at a later date.

It's also important that a forum address the interests of all it's members in the proper context and controlled fashion so that they continue to participate and add value to all the discussions over the long term..

Without some variety a forum can easily dry up and blow away..

Of course if they cross the line:

There has been some excellent observations and comments.

Yes Doc, at times the testosterone does seem to overwhelm the subject matter on some forums. I assume they mean well and rarely observed any mean spirited posts at TRF.

I agree with Larry's comments regarding the membership body and forum interests. Some subjects or posts may not be to my taste and I can choose whether I wish to participate. I don't have a fancy car, big house or great wealth so that helps to keep me grounded.

This has become my favorite hang out, as Larry so aptly put it, because it's a "kinder, gentler" and friendly atmosphere. I enjoy the variety of posts here and welcome the diverse ideas and comments.

No major disputes here other than taking exception to AJ's comment that he and Rodentman are the only ones with taste (coffee vs. tea)...
