Not a prize winning photo, but I finally got a hummingboid at the feeder...

Nice try Bob. You need some expensive equipment to get anything decent.

Well, the little Nikon Cookpix 4800 serves me well with its compact size and 8.3:1 zoom. It's light and I carry it everywhere. I realize its limitations, however.

It's a great little camera and ideal for carrying around. Some of the digital SLR lenses weigh 4 kilos!! Not very transportable. I have a 300mm 2.8 lens and after a while of trying to shoot birds in flight, my arms start to ache like hell.

We were in the back yard and saw the hummingbird fairly close up. He was not a ruby throat, I don't think, but had a small almost irridescent red spot on his throat. He flitted around the zinnias and the feeder, then made a beeline for my head! Had I not ducked I think he would have flown into me. I don't know why.
